Chemical name:                   Acrylonitrile-Butadiene Rubber (NBR) 

Product description:            Synthetic elastomeric copolymer; closed cell foam.


2.  Health Hazard Data

Inhalation:                            No hazard at ambient temperature.  Incapable of releasing residual monomers such as butadiene and acrylonitrile in an amount resulting in airborne concentrations above regulatory limits under normal conditions of handling and use.

 Ingestion:                              No hazard in normal use.

Skin contact:                         No hazard in normal use.  This material is inherently hypoallergenic.  Exposure to hot material may cause thermal burns.

Eye contact:                          Particulates may scratch eye surface and cause mechanical irritation.  Product is an inert solid, remove as with any foreign object.

Toxicity:                                 Not listed carcinogenic by IARC, NTP or OSHA.  Decomposition gases are toxic see flammability below.

3. Chemical / Physical Properties

Flammability:                       Decomposes above 250C; self extinguishing in absence of flame or heat source.  In case of fire, wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus or demand-type respirator, face shield or goggles, hood, coat, gloves and boots.  Avoid exposed skin.  Personnel without suitable protection should leave the area.

Stability:                                   Stable
Solubility in water:                  Insoluble
Hazardous polymerization:   Will not occur
Specific Gravity:                      ~0.98

4. Ecological and Disposal Information

Spillage:                                 Recover in suitable container for reuse, recycling, or disposal.

Environmental impacts:     Not biologically degradable.  Oxidation under influence of oxygen and U.V. radiation leads to very slow degradation of the product. NBR is not extractable by water.  Not toxic in contact with surface or well water.

Treatment and disposal:     Not defined or designated as hazardous.  Handle as a solid waste and ensure conformity to local disposal regulations.
